Some 500 parks with a total area of 100 million sq km will be set up across all 81 Turkish provinces by 2028, the Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, Mehmet Ozhaseki, said, as quoted by Turkish media.

Described as "the largest green space initiative in the history of the republic", the public parks project has already provided over 17 million sq m of green space as of 2018.

The Environment Ministry had announced that it would create 81 million sq m of parks in all 81 provinces. However, on President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's order, this target has been updated and by 2028 there will be 500 national parks with a total area of 100 million sq. m.

Public parks create green corridors in cities, allowing citizens to escape the hustle and bustle and enjoy a breath of fresh air, Minister Ozhaseki said.

He added that these parks will also be important in the event of earthquakes as people will be able to gather there safely.
