A wreath-laying ceremony was held here on Tuesday at the monument to Bulgarian revolutionary poet Hristo Botev (1848-1876), erected by the Bulgarian community in front of the Bulgarian House of Culture in Budapest. The ceremony marked the day of Botev and those who have died for Bulgaria's freedom and independence, the Bulgarian Republican Self-Government in Budapest wrote on Facebook.
At noon (Bulgarian time) on Tuesday, the bells of the St. St. Cyril and Methodius Bulgarian Orthodox Church rang in honour of the fallen heroes' memory. Vanya Kotorova, principal of the Bulgarian school and kindergarten in Budapest, gave a speech. Flowers and wreaths were laid by Bulgarian Ambassador to Hungary Maria Anguelieva, Bulgarian Republican Self-Government head Dancho Musev and deputy heads Gabriela Hadzsikosztova and Ivan Karailiev, representatives of the Bulgarian Self-Government in Jozsefvaros and the Bulgarian community in Hungary, teachers from the Bulgarian school, and children from the Bulgarian kindergarten.
The monument was created by sculptor Ognyan Kozhuharov, who lives and works in Hungary. It was unveiled on June 2, 1996.
