The issue of road safety is an extremely touchy one for the public, with all the accidents and all the victims, including on pedestrian crossings, Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov said before the regular meeting of the Council of Ministers Wednesday.

That is why one of the first meetings held other than in full Government format was one on June 16, with the Interior Minister, the Minister of Regional Development, and the Minister of Transport to see what can be done to turn the negative statistics in a positive direction, the Prime Minister said. They set out several measures that need to be systematically put into action, Denkov said, such as repair of risky sections of the road, regular measures regarding safe driving, measures related to changing the approach of training drivers, and in general children and the public, so that they can prepare for what awaits them on the roads as pedestrians, cyclists and drivers.

The Prime Minister congratulated the Interior Ministry for putting these measures into practice in the way it is currently for the first time just a few days later. This is the so-called joint inspection, in which teams from six different institutions, without prior announcement, appear at locations on the road network associated with risks and each of these institutions within its authority performs the designated activity, the Prime Minister explained. These are both checks on light and heavy vehicles, as well as checks on cars, in terms of the goods they carry, the documents they must have and the behaviour of drivers.
