Vice President Iliana Iotova believes that Bulgaria is right to push for a limit on wheat imports from Ukraine, but the move should be coordinated with the European Commission.

"Bulgaria has good reason for that. Samples taken from various foods did not obviously meet the quality requirements of the Bulgarian market. We have every reason to raise these conditions before the European Commission. This should be done by the caretaker government. Things cannot get done overnight, though," Iotova told journalists on Tuesday.

According to her, everything should be done in coordination with the European Commission, so that Bulgaria does not get punished. "What matters to me is to see what the caretaker government is doing. First, comply with national law, but also comply with EU law. To my knowledge, they have fulfilled their obligations both ways."

"Measures to notify the European Commission about possible import restrictions on various goods from Ukraine were taken already on Friday, before the Easter holidays. According to the most recent information available to me, the Agriculture Ministry has approached the Economy Ministry - because the Economy Ministry is responsible for Bulgaria's trade policies - with a very long list of goods whose import to Bulgaria they think should be restricted," the Vice President said.
