"There is no second Ghena Dimitrova, and there never will be," said Sofia Opera and Ballet Director Plamen Kartaloff at the presentation of the new issue of LIK magazine. The event took place at the Richard Wagner Club of the Sofia Opera and Ballet.

The issue is dedicated to the singer's 85th birth anniversary.

Ghena Dimitrova was born on June 5, 1941.

"Ghena Dimitrova is an extraordinary name and an emblem for Bulgaria and for the world," he said. "There is no other voice like hers anywhere in the world," Kartaloff added. He explained that during his work abroad, he had never encountered another voice like hers. "There is no second Ghena Dimitrova, and there never will be. She was a phenomenal, God-given talent," he said.

Kartaloff recalled that his first meeting with the soprano was in 1987 on the stage of the Sofia Opera, when, as a guest director, he staged Pagliacci. At the time, he was working at the Rousse Opera but had been invited to direct at the capital's opera house. His last meeting with Ghena Dimitrova was in 2001, again on the stage of the Sofia Opera, during a performance of Don Carlos. Their joint work included La Gioconda, Turandot, Un Ballo in Maschera, and many other productions.

"She is our living example. She was a natural person, not a prima donna in everyday life. She was the queen of the stage whenever she appeared, whenever she put on her costumes," Kartaloff said. He added that one of the performances during the Opera in the Square festival would be dedicated to Ghena Dimitrova. The production features some of her colleagues and rivals with whom the singer competed throughout her life.

"The Sofia Opera is still her home today," Kartaloff said.

He also noted that a museum of Bulgarian opera glory could be established in the Sofia Opera and Ballet building, an idea also presented by BTA Director General Kiril Valchev during the event dedicated to LIK magazine.
