site.btaMarine Science Society Elects Burgas Free University Rector as Chair

Burgas Free University Rector Prof. Milen Baltov has been elected Chair of the Marine Science Society (MSS) during the organization’s general assembly, the university said on Friday.

Baltov was nominated by the current MSS Chair, Fleet Admiral Prof. Kalin Kalinov, Rector of the Nikola Vaptsarov Naval Academy. During the assembly, members also elected a new Management Board and approved Burgas as the host city for the International Black Sea Day celebrations on October 31, 2026.

According to Burgas Free University, the Marine Science Society is preparing to act as the Steering Committee for a future research vessel planned under the Water Resources Sustainability Programme, financed through the EEA and Norwegian Financial Mechanisms 2021–2028. The vessel, with an estimated budget of EUR 30 million, is expected to support scientific research in the Black Sea region and contribute to the future implementation of the National Scientific Programme SEA.

Earlier this year, Burgas Free University became a member of the newly established European Ocean Board, which brings together 28 European institutions.
