Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) leader Delyan Peevski called the questioning of Kardzhali Mayor Erol Emin Mumun a major scandal and an act of police abuse on the Muslim holiday of Kurban Bayram. He arrived in Kardzhali to meet with Mumun, after the mayor had been taken in for questioning at the Regional Directorate of the Interior Ministry in Kardzhali earlier on Thursday. 

Peevski noted that MRF would alert all competent authorities and their European partners and stressed that Prime Minister Rumen Radev should react immediately and find out what happened. "This crossed every line. A squad of police officers escorting him out of the municipality building in Kardzhali, the police should be ashamed," Peevski said, adding that the questioning was meant to intimidate MRF mayors and Muslims. "We will not allow it. We reject the politics of fear," he said.

The questioning of Mumun was linked to an investigation into alleged misconduct in office related to a public procurement procedure, Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev had said.
