A mechanism for direct control over our MPs is needed, instead of relying solely on the judicial system, said Filip Pavlov, top-of-the-list MP candidate for the Anti-Corruption Bloc in Vratsa, during a meeting with citizens, the coalition's Vratsa office reported on Tuesday.
According to Pavlov, the fight against corruption should not be limited to the Prosecutor General and judicial reforms. "Corruption is above all a political problem and a betrayal of public trust. Without direct control over MPs, it cannot be resolved permanently," he emphasized, adding that democracy requires citizens to have the final say at all times.
As a key measure to restore trust in the political system, Pavlov proposes that citizens be given the right to initiate a referendum to dissolve the National Assembly of Bulgaria. He cited Latvia as an example, where such a right is enshrined in the constitution, and in 2011 a referendum of this kind actually led to the dissolution of parliament. "The mere existence of this procedure will create constant pressure on politicians," Pavlov explained.
He noted that politicians rarely give up their privileges, which undermines trust in politics and leads to low voter turnout. As an example, he pointed to MPs' salaries, which he believes should be limited to two minimum wages. "That is about EUR 1,200 instead of EUR 4,000 this year, which will allow MPs to remain connected to real life," Pavlov said.
