Landmark buildings across the country will be illuminated in blue and green in support of patients suffering from lymphedema, the Bulgarian Lymphedema Association said on Friday.

The initiative is part of the campaign organized by the Lights of Hope patient organization and is an appeal to the State for urgent systemic change and the introduction of treatment standards, the association added.

Patients, most of them women who developed the condition after undergoing cancer treatment, are often left to cope on their own. The number of trained therapists is extremely insufficient and there is no reimbursement for the mandatory compression garments required by patients, the organization said.

Lymphedema is a progressive, chronic condition associated with severe and debilitating swelling of the limbs. It most commonly occurs as a complication following life-saving cancer treatment.

The association called on the public and the media not to remain indifferent. “Every illuminated building is proof that when institutions and civil society join forces, the path to change becomes possible,” the organizers added. They invite citizens to support the campaign by photographing the illuminated buildings in their cities on Friday evening and sharing the images on social media using the hashtags #LightsOfHope and #WLD2026.
