Russian President Vladimir Putin has failed to achieve any of his objectives in Ukraine, and Bulgaria has stood on the right side of history, Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria (CC-DB) said in a declaration marking four years since Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine. The statement was read from the rostrum of the National Assembly by CC-DB MP Atanas Atanassov.

“Putin has failed to achieve any of his goals in Ukraine. He failed because he relied on fear – the oldest sustenance of evil. Paradoxically or not, today he is the one who fears the most,” Atanassov said. He added that Putin knows Russian history well and the harsh pattern of its wars, from the unsuccessful campaigns of the 17th and 18th centuries, through the Crimean War, 1917, Afghanistan and the collapse of the Soviet Union. “Every return of the Russian army home sweeps away the ruling political elite like an avalanche, regardless of whether it returns under the banner of victory or defeat,” Atanassov stressed, adding that the Kremlin now faces the same trap.

Atanassov said Europe responded with unity. “We cannot compare ourselves with the sacrifice and courage of the Ukrainian people, but we stood firmly with them through political support, economic assistance, sanctions against the aggressor, and military and humanitarian aid,” he said. “I am proud that despite enormous domestic resistance, Bulgaria also showed no hesitation and found a way to stand on the right side of history,” Atanassov added.

He recalled that early on, under the government of Kiril Petkov, Bulgaria’s defence industry supplied significant quantities of ammunition, which in the first months covered a substantial share of the Ukrainian army’s needs. “At a critical moment, Bulgaria also provided major deliveries of diesel fuel that sustained the mobility of Ukraine’s defence. We supported the decisive sanctions of the European Union, took an active part in the common European response, and with a decision of Parliament declared Russia a state that sponsors terrorism. We proved that we can show political will, courage and solidarity. This contribution must not be forgotten,” Atanassov said.

“Nations are born and consolidated by the scale of the sacrifice their people are ready to make together, alliances as well. If Putin imagined he would shatter Ukraine’s European dream, he achieved the opposite – it has already become an irreversible reality. Glory to Ukraine. Long live a free and united Europe,” Atanassov concluded.
