The role of young people in the revolutionary processes of the April Uprising was emphasized by Sofia University Rector Prof. Georgi Valchev during a conference dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the 1876 April Uprising in the BTA National Press Club in Sliven on Thursday.

"This conversation is for us, for the Bulgarians, for you, dear children. Speaking about events from 150 years ago, we reflect on who we are today, where we want to be and what message we leave for future generations," he said. Behind every face of heroes such as Zahari Stoyanov, Georgi Rakovski and Vasil Levski stands a story of efforts, dreams and hopes, the university rector noted. "You must discover these stories, so that the paintings are not just decoration, but a window to the past and an inspiration for the future," Valchev pointed out.

"The revolutionaries of the April Uprising were young people, just like you. Youth gives birth to dreams, and a dream, transformed into an idea and a flag, cannot be stopped," he said. The rector called on the students to think of Bulgaria with the dream of a free, strong and equal country, just as its ancestors thought 150 years ago. "In 10, 20 or 30 years from now, it is you who will determine the country's future. We still have difficult years ahead of us, but the lesson of 1876 is clear: when there is an idea and people ready to follow it, there is no force that can stop them," Valchev concluded.

BTA's series of conferences are part of a joint initiative with Bulgarian National Television (BNT) and Bulgarian National Radio (BNR), called “14 Centuries of Bulgaria in Europe”, aiming to commemorate anniversaries in Bulgarian history that are significant for European history through to 2032, when 1,400 years will be marked since the establishment of the first Bulgarian state in Europe - Old Great Bulgaria.
