site.btaGoogle Provides USD 500,000 in Further Funding to INSAIT for Advances in Artificial Intelligence

Google, the global technology leader, has supported the Institute for Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence and Technology (INSAIT) at Sofia University with an award of USD 500,000. The distinction is given for high results achieved in the development of artificial intelligence at national and international level. The funds will help generate new world-class developments in this field, the press centre of the Education and Science Ministry said on Monday.

The financing will give INSAIT researchers additional opportunities to work on key projects in strategic areas such as computer vision, robotics, machine learning and others aimed at creating technologies of global significance.

The award reinforces the long-term partnership between INSAIT and Google and supports the institute’s mission to conduct world-class scientific research in Bulgaria, establishing the country as an important centre for the development of artificial intelligence and high technologies in the region, Europe and the world, the statement noted.

It recalled that the global technology giant has systematically supported the institute financially since its creation.

On October 28, 2025, the Education and Science Ministry said that INSAIT was receiving USD 1 million in financing from Google, putting the technology giant’s total investment in the institute at USD 6 million. Their strategic partnership is aimed at deepening the commitment to open and inclusive research and innovation in artificial intelligence in Central and Eastern Europe. The donation provided further support for INSAIT’s research activities with additional computing resources and for the national Explorer programme for talented Bulgarian students who continue their higher education in Bulgaria in the field of computer science, the ministry explained at the time.

INSAIT is the first facility in Eastern Europe to offer world-class working conditions corresponding to those in leading Western universities and institutes. The institute is structured as a special unit of Sofia University and was created in partnership with Switzerland’s ETH Zurich and EPFL, two of the best technology universities in the world. Leading scientists from top American, European and Israeli universities and research laboratories lead and advise the institute. INSAIT’s main focus is on scientific excellence: world-class research, attracting international scientists with exceptional achievements, and educating the next generation of students and technology leaders.
