Fruit and Vegetable Prices Rise on Bulgaria's Wholesale Markets as Some Staple Foods Fall

Prices of fruits and vegetables rose, while some staple food prices declined on Bulgaria's wholesale markets over the past week, according to data from the State Commission on Commodity Exchanges and Wholesale Markets.

The Wholesale Food Price Index, which tracks wholesale food prices in Bulgaria, increased by 0.78% to 2.448 points, compared to 2.429 points in the previous week. The base level of 1.000 was set in 2005.

Among the vegetables monitored by the State Commission, the sharpest price increase was recorded for green peppers, up 18.37% to EUR 1.34 per kg, followed by courgettes, which rose 17.69% to EUR 1.61 per kg.

Potatoes gained 15.74% to EUR 0.50 per kg. Red peppers increased 13.13% to EUR 1.62 per kg, while onions were up 17.51% to EUR 0.51 per kg. Tomatoes rose 5.38% to EUR 1.92 per kg, and carrots gained 4.61% to EUR 0.59 per kg. Among vegetables, only cucumbers fell, down 2.12% to EUR 2.22 per kg, along with cabbage, which lost 4.21% to EUR 0.41 per kg.

Among fruits, the sharpest rise was recorded for tangerines, up 14.26% to EUR 1.33 per kg. Oranges gained 5.61% to EUR 1.28 per kg, while bananas edged up 0.55% to EUR 1.46 per kg. Lemons rose 2.20% to EUR 1.67 per kg, and apples gained 1.23% to EUR 1.15 per kg.

The price of cow's milk white brine cheese fell 0.99% to EUR 5.98 per kg, while Vitosha yellow kashkaval cheese declined 0.21% to EUR 9.40 per kg. Yogurt (3% or higher fat content) dropped 4.31% to EUR 0.71 per 400 g cup, and milk increased 4.03% to EUR 1.24 per litre. Butter (125 g pack) fell 2.71% to EUR 1.51 per pack.

Frozen chicken meat slipped 0.17% to EUR 3.52 per kg. The price of eggs (size M) rose 0.92% to EUR 0.22 apiece at wholesale.

Rice declined 1.64% to EUR 1.68 per kg, lentils fell 3% to EUR 2.07 per kg, and dried beans dropped 1.88% to EUR 2.09 per kg. Flour (grade 500) dropped 3.23% to EUR 0.78 per kg. Sunflower oil rose 2.73% to EUR 1.73 per litre. Sugar gained 1.10% to EUR 0.92 per kg.
