Bulgaria's Gross External Debt Up by 12.5% Y/Y to Nearly EUR 55 Bln at End-September

Bulgaria's gross external debt (public and private) amounted to EUR 54,934.7 million at end-September 2025, up by EUR 6,096 million (a 12.5% increase) from end-September 2024 (EUR 48,838.7 million). The gross external debt stood at 48.9% of GDP at end-September 2025 compared with 46.6% of GDP a year earlier.

Short-term liabilities equalled EUR 10,198.3 million (18.6% of the total debt, 9.1% of GDP), up by EUR 821.1 million (8.8%) from end-September 2024 (EUR 9,377.2 million, 19.2% of the total debt, 9% of GDP). Long-term liabilities totalled EUR 44,736.4 million (81.4% of the total debt, 39.8% of GDP) at end-September 2025, up by EUR 5,275 million (13.4%) from end-September 2024 (EUR 39,461.5 million, 80.8% of the total debt, 37.7% of GDP).

Gross external liabilities with more than one year to maturity totalled EUR 35,836.7 million (65.2%) at end-September 2025. Also, 81.6% of gross external liabilities were denominated in euro, compared with 78.5% at end-September 2024.

General government gross external debt totalled EUR 17,450.8 million (15.5% of GDP) at end-September 2025, up by EUR 4,149.5 million (31.2%) from end-September 2024 (EUR 13,301.3 million, 12.7% of GDP). It accounted for the largest share in external debt, 31.8% at end-September 2025, compared with 27.2% in end-September 2024.

The external liabilities of the central bank stood at EUR 1,907.3 million (1.7% of GDP), down by EUR 85.1 million (4.3%) from end-September 2024 (EUR 1,992.4 million, 1.9% of GDP).
