Foreign Minister Georg Georgiev held a meeting with the ambassadors of European Union Member States to Bulgaria, his Ministry said on Thursday. The meeting, which took place at the Embassy of the Kingdom of Denmark in Sofia, was organised as part of Denmark’s current Presidency of the Council of the EU.

Key topics on the current European agenda were discussed at the meeting. Georgiev placed particular emphasis on support for Ukraine, EU enlargement policy and security in the Black Sea region. “Bulgaria welcomes the continued efforts of the US and President Trump to achieve a just and lasting peace in Ukraine. The plan presented by the United States has provided a solid basis for further work towards a sustainable resolution of the conflict,” the Minister said. He stressed that EU unity is of paramount importance, as any future peace agreement would have a direct impact not only on Bulgaria and the European Union but also on the security of the entire continent.

Georgiev noted that EU enlargement policy remains among Bulgaria’s top priorities. He congratulated Montenegro, Albania, Ukraine and Moldova on the progress achieved and their consistent reform efforts, underlining the need for all candidate countries to fulfil their commitments to the EU. “The principle of assessment on the basis of individual merit remains fundamental to progress in the accession process,” the Foreign Minister said.

Georgiev underlined the importance of preserving unanimity in decision-making under the Common Foreign and Security Policy as well as in enlargement policy. “Unity in the EU is more necessary today than ever,” he said.

The Minister also highlighted the strategic importance of the Black Sea region for the security of the EU and Europe. He said that a stable and predictable environment in the Black Sea enhances the resilience and connectivity of the region with the Western Balkans, the South Caucasus and Central Asia. “An essential step in this direction is the adoption of the EU’s strategic approach to the Black Sea, initiated by Bulgaria and Romania and supported by a broad range of Member States,” the Minister noted. He added that Bulgaria is actively working to implement concrete projects in the areas of security, connectivity and resilience in the Black Sea region.

The discussion also included exchanges of views on other important international and regional issues, including the situation in the Middle East and the EU’s approach towards China.
