The Marine Cluster Bulgaria in Varna will become a co-location centre of the EIT Water initiative for the Black Sea, the Cluster said on Monday. The EIT Water initiative is a new Knowledge and Innovation Community under the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) that works on challenges facing water, marine, and maritime sectors.

The Black Sea region will receive direct access to resources, expertise, innovation programmes and investment opportunities from the EIT Water network, the Bulgarian cluster noted.

As a co-location centre, the Marine Cluster Bulgaria will work on capacity building and training, promote new projects and start-ups in the maritime and water sector. In addition, its tasks will include providing an integrated approach to addressing the problems of water scarcity, drought and flooding, marine pollution, as well as the development of a circular and sustainable blue economy.

There will be a total of eight co-location centres, with the initiative being led by the Allwaters consortium, including 50 partners from 24 countries. More than 20 organizations from the Black Sea region have expressed interest and support for the consortium’s activities.

EIT Water is the leading European initiative dedicated to solving challenges in water resource management, the cleanliness of marine ecosystems and the development of a sustainable maritime economy, the Marine Cluster Bulgaria stated, adding that the emphasis is on finding solutions to water scarcity, pollution and the destruction of aquatic ecosystems.
