The Bulgarian naval research vessel Sv. Sv. Kiril i Metodii (RSV 421) is being used in monitoring Bulgaria's Black Sea waters. Samples will be taken at more than 20 sites along the whole length of the territorial sea, said Flotilla Admiral Prof. Boyan Mednikarov, Rector of the Nikola Vaptsarov Naval Academy of Varna.

Many parameters will be checked, including the presence of heavy metals and even radiation. The first results should be out next week, Mednikarov said. Samples will be taken by experts from the Environment and Water Executive Agency.

Prof. Mednikarov said monitoring of the Bulgarian Black Sea waters began immediately after the Kakhovka Dam blast. He added that Bulgaria's sea water is clean and the situation in Ukraine poses no risk to it.

RSV 421 made a 127-day voyage to Livingston Island in Antarctica between December 27, 2022 and May 2, 2023. BTA's Daily News editor Konstantin Karagyozov was the only member of the media who travelled on board the ship to Livingston Island and back and covered the Bulgarian expedition throughout its stay in Antarctica.
