As at January 6, there were EUR 6.7 billion worth of euro banknotes and coins in circulation in Bulgaria, show data released by the Bulgarian National Bank on Friday. The cash in leva amounted to BGN 5.9 billion, meaning 81% of the banknotes and coins in the national currency have already been withdrawn from circulation.
Compared to the end of the previous working week, the leva in circulation decreased by approximately BGN 1.8 billion, from BGN 7.7 billion as at January 30. At the same time, euro banknotes and coins in circulation increased by approximately EUR 600 million, as they amounted to EUR 6.1 billion as at January 30.
As of February 1, 2026, the euro is the only legal tender in the Republic of Bulgaria, the bank recalls.
