"Your role in the development of relations between Bulgaria and the United States is key. It is an honor for me to be among you on this especially significant day for Bulgaria - the Day of Bravery and the Day of the Bulgarian Army," Foreign Minister Georg Georgiev addressed members of the Bulgarian community during a meeting at the Embassy of Bulgaria in Washington, the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry reported in a press release on Wednesday.
Bulgaria's top diplomat stated that this country is working purposefully to strengthen its strategic partnership with the U.S. across all areas of mutual interest. He emphasized the enhanced cooperation in security and defence, energy, trade and economic relations, and people-to-people connections, with a focus on Bulgaria's aspiration for early inclusion in the U.S. Visa Waiver Program.
During the conversation, Minister Georgiev outlined the main priorities of Bulgaria’s foreign policy, which include joining the Eurozone, accession to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), promoting economic growth, and enhancing Bulgaria’s role in ensuring stability and prosperity in Southeast Europe.
“Bulgaria makes a valuable contribution to shaping EU policies and is actively working to develop our strategic partnership with the United States,” the Minister noted. He added that Bulgaria firmly supports strong transatlantic relations, which contribute to security and progress both regionally and globally.
In response to questions from the Bulgarian community, Minister Georgiev highlighted Bulgaria’s consistent efforts to conclude a social security agreement with the U.S.—an issue raised at every high-level meeting with American counterparts.
Other key points discussed included the development prospects for the high-tech sector, boosting economic competitiveness, attracting investments, and more.
The event took place as part of Minister Georgiev’s visit to Washington to participate in the Munich Leaders Summit, hosted in Washington.
