Deputy Foreign Minister Elena Shekerletova represented Bulgaria at the informal meeting of Ministers for European Affairs, held in Copenhagen on 1–2 September 2025, the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday. Denmark hosted the forum as it currently holds the EU Presidency.
The ministers for European affairs discussed the EU enlargement process with representatives of potential candidates and candidates for EU membership also present. The Bulgarian side underlined the importance of political will in implementing reforms in key areas, such as the rule of law, minority rights, and good relations with neighbouring countries to progress towards becoming members of the EU.
EU ministers also discussed the rule of law within the EU and how to strengthen it, as well as internal EU reforms. Shekerletova noted that Bulgaria has consistently supported internal reform only if it is based on thorough and comprehensive analyses, promotes transparency and reflects all member states' positions and interests.
The EU can achieve democratic legitimacy of decisions, political commitment, resilience, and effective implementation, can only be achieved through unanimity on the areas set out in the EU treaties, added the Deputy Minister.
On the sidelines of the forum, Shekerletova held a brief meeting with Gunter Krichbaum, Minister of State for European Affairs at the German Federal Foreign Office, during which the two sides discussed bilateral relations and current issues on the European agenda.
