Three young Bulgarian chemists have been selected to participate in the 74th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting (Chemistry), which will be held in the German town between June 29 and July 4, the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) told BTA on Tuesday.

Erik Dimitrov from the Institute of Polymers, Lyuben Borislavov from the Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry and Boris Yanachkov from the Institute of Metal Science, Equipment and Technologies will join the week-long event, in which 35 Nobel Laureates will meet with over 600 young researchers. The distinguished scientists will deliver interdisciplinary lectures, which will be followed by discussions in various formats and informal talks. The young researchers, gathered from all over the world, will have a chance to discuss their projects with leading specialists in their disciplines.

Every year the BAS is asked to nominate young scientists to attend the meeting in Lindau. BAS departments propose candidates, and then the BAS leadership chooses the best of them. The shortlisted applicants undergo a check by a scientific committee appointed by the Council for the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings. The applicants’ academic achievements, motivation and dedication, recommendation letters and non-academic activities are taken into consideration. The BAS invitees were selected from among young scientists in more than 84 countries.

Eligible applicants should be scientists at an early career stage who boast high achievements in the featured branch of science (this year, chemistry) and related disciplines. They can be doctoral students or postdoctoral scientists with up to five years of research experience, who should be recommended by at least two distinguished scientists in the respective field. Varied non-academic activities and excellent English are among the requirements as well.

Established in 1951, the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings provide a globally recognized forum for exchange between Nobel Laureates and young scientists. They inspire scientific generations and build sustainable networks of young scientists around the world. The theme of the Lindau Meetings alternates between the three Nobel Prize scientific disciplines, physics, chemistry or physiology/medicine. Every five years an interdisciplinary meeting takes place, while the Lindau Nobel Meeting in Economic Sciences is held every three years.

John M. Jumper (winner of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry), Moungi G. Bawendi (2023), Morten Meldal (2022) and Michael Levitt (2013) are among the Nobel Laureates to attend the 74th Meeting.
