President Rumen Radev attended a reception at the Bulgarian Embassy in Tokyo on Monday. The event was hosted by Bulgarian Ambassador to Japan Marieta Arabadzhieva and Honorary Consul of Bulgaria in Japan Kazuo Kawamura. “In every bilateral relationship, the most important element is the connection between people. It is a real pleasure to see how many Japanese people are genuinely interested in Bulgaria,” Radev told the attendees.

The head of State is currently on an official visit to Japan and is scheduled to have an audience with Emperor Naruhito later on Monday.

“It is no coincidence that I have been invited to this audience by Emperor Naruhito. Tomorrow, I will also meet with Prime Minister [Shigeru] Ishiba, during which we will sign an agreement to elevate our relations to the level of strategic partnership. This is a significant and logical outcome of our long-standing ties, increasingly dynamic sectoral cooperation, and the tremendous potential in our relations,” Radev noted.

The President also spoke about Bulgaria's participation in Expo 2025 in Osaka, highlighting the strong interest in the Bulgarian pavilion. “It was a pleasure to attend Bulgaria Day at the Expo yesterday. Our pavilion draws thousands of visitors daily who experience not only Bulgaria’s rich history, culture, and traditions but also its modern face,” he said.

Radev noted that Bulgaria is widely recognized in Japan for its yogurt, calling it “an incredible advertisement” for the country. “But it’s not just our yogurt, roses, and strong sumo wrestlers –Bulgaria is increasingly known as a country advancing in high technology,” he added, stressing that Bulgaria is developing these sectors in partnership with Japan.

According to the president, there is enormous potential for collaboration in information technologies, artificial intelligence, and innovative manufacturing ventures involving Japanese businesses in Bulgaria. “The declaration we are set to sign with Prime Minister Ishiba, the audience with the emperor – these events provide a new perspective and open many doors,” Radev concluded.
