Bulgarian freediver Silvia Rashkova set a new national women's record by reaching a depth of 63 metres in the FIM (free immersion) discipline during a competition in Dahab, Egypt on Tuesday. In the FIM discipline the freediver dives without the use of propulsion equipment by pulling on a rope during descent and ascent.
The record came from her third attempt after she turned too early to the surface at 50 and 55 metres in her previous two.
"During my depth training in November I reached a depth of 65 metres," she told BTA on Wednesday, but as the dive was not a part of an official competition, it cannot be counted as a national record. She explained that as months went by, some progress was lost and this week, just before the competition, she managed to reach a maximum of 60 metres.
Since her debut in official competitions at the end of 2023, Rashkova has set a total of nine national records in three separate disciplines - FIM, CWTB and CWT. She is a certified instructor at Bulgaria's first freediving school.
After her previous FIM record in 2024, she gave an exclusive interview to the Bulgarian News Agency, in which she spoke about what made her fall in love with freediving, the wrong perceptions about the sport, the conditions for practicing it in Bulgaria and the ways it can be useful to us in everyday life.
