Bulgaria’s highest ranked tennis player Grigor Dimitrov qualified for the fourth round of the ATP Masters 1000 clay tournament in Madrid on Tuesday. A 6-4 7-6(3) win over world No. 68 Jacob Fearnley means that he will face former No. 9 Cameron Norrie (currently No.91) or Canadian Gabriel Diallo (No. 78) in the next stage of the competition.
Dimitrov’s match against Fearnley was interrupted at 6-4 5-4 due to the major power outage in Spain on Monday. Before the interruption, the Bulgarian failed to convert a match point at 5-2 and suffered a break of serve which let the British player back into the set.
After the game resumed on Tuesday, Dimitrov reached another match point at 6-5 but it was also unsuccessful. In the tiebreak, he fell behind twice, before recovering and securing the win with 5 points in a row.
The Bulgarian did not have his best serving day as he managed to find the target with only 55% of his first serves but still scored 11 aces. He saved four out of six break points to close the match in straight sets.
Grigor Dimitrov is currently No. 16 in the world. His record in Madrid includes 12 wins and 11 losses with his best result coming in 2015 when he lost to Spanish legend Rafael Nadal in the quarterfinals. Last year he lost to Czech Jacub Mensik in the second round.
