Sofia University Rector Prof. Georgi Valchev stated that "the presence of the Bulgarian revolutionary, writer and journalist Lyuben Karavelov in the Serbian capital was not peaceful, but contributed to his gaining invaluable experience, so that he became a central figure of Bulgarian emigration."

On Tuesday, the Bulgarian News Agency, with the assistance of the Bulgarian Embassy in the Serbian capital, unveiled a commemorative plaque in Karavelov's memory (1834 – 1879) on the facade of the Bulgarian Consulate in Belgrade.

Karavelov became involved in the full-blooded political processes that were taking place in Serbian society at that time, of course he suffered separate sanctions, but this was an invaluable experience when he subsequently moved to the Romanian capital Bucharest, Prof. Valchev told BTA in Belgrade.

"We must ensure that the memory of Lyuben Karavelov lives on, because despite the crises and periods of difficulty that we are experiencing as a society, memory is what unites us and will finally allow the creation of this state dreamed of by our revivalists," added the Rector of Sofia University.

Today in the Serbian capital, BTA Director General Kiril Valchev proposed the Bulgarian Landmarks Worldwide, s a generalized map of monuments, memorial plaques and signs around the world that are related to places, personalities and events from Bulgarian history. Prof. Georgi Valchev said that it is extremely important for Sofia University to join the initiative. He recommended that in the coming years the initiative become a serious programme that all Bulgarian institutions should stand behind.
