Twenty athletes will represent Bulgaria at the 14th World Calisthenics Championships that will take place from April 24 to 27 at Sofia’s Asics Arena.

"This is the first time Bulgaria will host the World Calisthenics Championships, and the first time the event will be held in such a large venue. For the first time in the World [Calisthenics] Championships’ history, admission will be free. We want to show everyone how great this sport is. It is still not that popular in our country, but it is steadily gaining traction,” said Tsvetan Georgiev, chairperson of the World Championships organizing committee and a member of the Executive Committee of the Bulgarian Gymnastics Federation. Georgiev was speaking during a public training session with the Bulgarian team at the gymnastics hall in Sofia’s Gerena complex.

“The International Olympic Committee is increasingly focused on these modern, urban sports that are free and accessible to young people. Bulgaria has and, I hope, will continue to have a strong presence in this sport,” Georgiev said.

Two-time world freerun champion and head coach of the national team Delyan Dimitrov said that Bulgaria has the best calisthenics athletes - Cveti Staneva, Jasmina Svilenova, Daniel Hristov, Radoslav Radev, Simeon Mihaylov, Dobrin Dobrev, Cristian Tirotta, and Viktor Kamenov, among others. They have been representing this country for many years, Dimitrov added. “They have built a community that works hard and continues to deliver top results. We are not just participating, we are aiming for first place,” he said.

Dimitrov explained that calisthenics includes various disciplines, such as freestyle, which features acrobatic elements, and endurance.

Tsvetan Georgiev and Bulgarian Gymnastics Federation Secretary General Jordan Jovtchev are behind the championship's organization.

Athletes from 59 countries have registered to compete in the World Calisthenics Championships.
