The winter season in Borovets was officially opened on Saturday with a light and torch show, a musical programme and entertainment for children. Various activities took place throughout the day, while the official opening ceremony was held in the early evening on a specially built stage in the centre of the resort.

The first to take the stage was Bulgarian skiing legend Petar Popangelov who wished great success to the management of the resort and an enjoyable stay to the visitors. Georgi Kochov, concessionaire Borosport Sports Director, assured everyone that there would be snow this season.

Samokov Municipality Mayor Angel Dzhorgov said it was a great honour and responsibility for him to open this year’s season. He noted that temperatures were low and that the snowmaking machines were already operating. “With this ceremony, we are also launching the celebrations marking 130 years of Borovets,” the mayor said. He wished everyone a wonderful snow-packed season, and thanked restaurateurs, hoteliers and Borosport employees. In an interview with BTA, Dzhorgov added that the goal was to make Borovets better known and more talked about. This year’s season opening was larger in scale than last year’s, he said.

Borosport Executive Director Ivo Tsvetkov said the resort had become a symbol of tradition, sporting success and mountain magic. “But Borovets is not only history and tradition, Borovets is also constant development,” Tsvetkov added. He said that Borosport’s investment programme includes a new ten-seat gondola lift and an expansion of the snow zone with investments in the higher parts of the Rila mountain.

Sofia Regional Governor Silvia Arnautska described the year as a magical one, “marking 130 years of history, memory and grandeur that should not only be remembered, but passed on and celebrated.”

Following the official opening, a light and torch show captivated the attention of the spectators.

Saturday marked the start of a series of initiatives throughout 2026, during which Borovets will celebrate its history, from the historic Chamkoria to the modern, dynamic resort that it has become today. The anniversary will run under the motto: "130 years of Borovets. Legendary past. Boundless future".

Throughout the day, lift passes for children were available at the symbolic price of BGN 1, while day and night skiing passes for all other age groups were at half price. Free group lessons for 130 beginner children, including free equipment were also provided.

The festivities began in the morning with a Historical Treasure Hunt, an interactive adventure that led participants to iconic locations around the resort through games and challenges with special prizes.

From the morning onwards, guests were also able to watch demonstrations by the Mountain Rescue Service.

The celebrations will conclude in the evening with a concert by the band Molets.

Throughout the upcoming jubilee 2026 year, Borovets will host a series of events, initiatives and improvements aimed at modernising the resort and strengthening its position as an even more attractive year-round destination. Visitors can expect sports and cultural events, themed festivals and new experiences that highlight the spirit and future of the resort.
