Meeting here on Friday, Minister of Agriculture and Food Georgi Tahov and Azerbaijan’s Minister of Agriculture Majnun Gadir oglu Mammadov agreed that Bulgaria and Azerbaijan will deepen their cooperation in agriculture and trade in agricultural products, the Agricultural Ministry reported. Minister Tahov noted that Bulgaria sees Azerbaijan as a reliable strategic partner in the South Caucasus and the wider Black Sea region.

Minister Mammadov is visiting Bulgaria in his capacity as Co-Chair of the Bulgaria-Azerbaijan Intergovernmental Commission for Economic Cooperation, whose seventh session took place in Sofia on October 30 and 31, 2025.

Tahov told the guest that Bulgaria’s agricultural science is highly developed, noting that the Agricultural Academy can offer joint research programmes in areas such as food and beverage technology and quality control, seed and fertilizer production, and the development of new crop varieties adapted to the climate of both countries. “The Agricultural Academy could also train PhD students from Azerbaijan in fields such as crop production, plant protection, biological sciences, animal husbandry, and food technologies,” Minister Tahov added.

He also highlighted opportunities to enhance cooperation in fisheries and aquaculture through exchanges on sustainable fish stock management and preventing illegal fishing. Tahov noted the potential to expand bilateral trade in agricultural goods, citing strong cooperation on food safety and existing export certificates as key incentives.

Minister Mammadov said Azerbaijan seeks to boost agricultural trade with Bulgaria, noting strong long-term cooperation. He listed among the leading Bulgarian agricultural exports to Azerbaijan in 2024 and the first eight months of 2025 bakery, pasta, and confectionery goods. Hazelnut imports from Azerbaijan have also increased in 2025.
