Bulgaria recorded the fourth-highest annual increase in new car registrations in the EU in August 2025, show European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA) data published on Thursday.

The number has increased by 25.9%, marking a rise in fourth consecutive month and surpassing the growth in July (20.5%). Last month, a total of 3,684 new cars were registered in Bulgaria, according to ACEA data.

In the EU, only Lithuania (52.4%), Romania (51.7%), and Latvia (39.2%) reported higher growth in newly registered cars.

Petrol models continued to dominate the new car market in Bulgaria in August, with a share of 81.6%. They were followed by diesel-powered vehicles (7.8%), battery electric cars (BEV) (5%), hybrid electric (HEV) (4%), and plug-in hybrid electric cars (PHEV) (1.6%).

By August 2025 year-to-date, new EU car registrations edged down by 0.1% compared to the same period last year, despite marking a second consecutive month of positive growth.

The battery-electric car market share for August 2025 YTD held at 15.8%, still below the pace needed at this stage of the transition. Hybrid-electric car market remained the most popular power type amongst buyers.

Up until August 2025, battery-electric cars accounted for 15.8% of the EU market share, an increase from the low baseline of 12.6% in August 2024 YTD. Hybrid-electric car registrations continue to surge, capturing 34.7% of the market, remaining the preferred choice among EU consumers. Meanwhile, the combined market share of petrol and diesel cars fell to 37.5%, down from 47.6% over the same period in 2024.
