GERB leader Boyko Borissov wrote in his Facebook page after his visit to the SAMEL - 90 military factory here on Wednesday that investments should be made in ventures that promise profitable returns. He said that the government's task should be to ensure that Bulgaria takes full advantage of the mechanisms provided by the European Commission, while coordinating the activities of European companies and developing joint production when investors arrive.

A press release sent to BTA by SAMEL - 90 reported that Borissov was joined by Defence Minister Atanas Zapryanov, Samokov Mayor Angel Dzhorgov, and GERB-UDF MP Valentin Milushev. Deputy Defence Minister Adelina Nikolova and Chief of Defence Admiral Emil Eftimov also took part in the meeting.

In a video posted on Facebook on Wednesday, Borissov said: "The goal is to have the Bulgarian economy and Bulgarian industry in the military-industrial complex to develop and create added value, so that there can be more taxes and increased revenues."

Petar Georgiev, the CEO of SAMEL - 90, said that his company exports high-tech products to over 30 countries around the world. He expressed his desire to have the company to support Bulgarian industry as well. The management of SAMEL - 90 presented some of the products that the factory in Samokov produces, which include electronic systems, communication and defence equipment. Georgiev emphasized that Bulgarian companies in the sector contribute to the state budget and provide thousands of jobs. "The Bulgarian armed forces must work with Bulgarian companies, because they are the ones that create products, taxes, and employment here," Georgiev added.

During the visit, an upcoming meeting with the Bulgarian Defence Industry Association – Acad. Stefan Vodenicharov was announced, at which specific steps for closer cooperation between the armed forces, the State, and companies in the defence sector will be discussed.

SAMEL - 90 was founded in 1964 with the main purpose of manufacturing electronic communications equipment for the needs of the Bulgarian armed forces. Today, the company is among the leaders in the Bulgarian defence industry, offering products for both military and civilian use. It manufactures LED lighting fixtures, technical ceramics, and mechanical components, while its military products include anti-drone systems, kamikaze combat drones, radio jammers, and armoured vehicles.
