Housing loans issued by banks in Bulgaria increased by BGN 6.1 billion over the past 12 months, reaching BGN 28.917 billion as at the end of June this year, the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB) reported on Wednesday. At the end of the first half of 2024, housing loans amounted to BGN 22.810 billion, representing 26.8% growth year-on-year, with the pace accelerating slightly compared to May, with 26.7% annual growth.
Consumer loans also recorded a significant increase, growing by 14% annually and surpassing the BGN 20 billion mark for the first time, reaching BGN 20.179 billion at the end of June.
As a result, the total amount of loans to households (including non-profit institutions serving households) reached BGN 51.003 billion at the end of June, marking a 20.8% year-on-year growth. This total also includes "other loans" and overdrafts.
Household bank loans now account for 23.3% of the estimated gross domestic product (GDP) of Bulgaria.
Loans to the non-financial corporate sector grew by 8.8% year-on-year in June 2025 (compared to 9.3% growth in May 2025), reaching BGN 50.262 billion by the end of the month, or 22.9% of GDP.
Loans provided to financial enterprises amounted to BGN 8.877 billion (4% of GDP) as of the end of June 2025. Compared to June 2024, this is an 11.7% increase (10.5% annual growth in May 2025).
Altogether, as of the end of June 2025, loans to the non-government sector in Bulgaria reached BGN 110.142 billion (50.2% of GDP), up from BGN 108.586 billion in May 2025 (49.4% of GDP). On an annual basis, it is a 14.3% growth, consistent with the rate recorded in May.
