Bulgaria recorded significant growth in new car registrations in May 2025, with a year-on-year increase of 19.7%, placing it fifth among European Union Member States for growth that month, according to the latest data from the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (EAMA) published on Wednesday.
A total of 3,857 new cars were registered in Bulgaria in May, compared to 3,222 in the same month of 2024.
Petrol-powered vehicles accounted for the largest share of new registrations, making up 80.2% of all newly registered cars. Diesel vehicles followed with a 9.7% share, while battery electric vehicles represented 5.1%, hybrid electric vehicles 3.1%, and plug-in hybrids 1.8%.
Battery electric vehicles saw the highest year-on-year growth in May, increasing by 107.4% to 197 units. Hybrid electric vehicles followed with 120 registrations, up 62.2%, and plug-in hybrids with 68 registrations, up 47.8%. Petrol car registrations also increased - by 18%, to 3,094 vehicles, while diesel registrations declined slightly by 1.6% to 376 units.
For the first five months of 2025, new car registrations in Bulgaria reached 19,472 units, marking a 2.9% increase compared to the same period last year.
