site.btaTourism Secretary to the President: Bulgaria Must Shed "Cheap Destination" Image

Secretary to the President for Education, Culture and Tourism Ilin Dimitrov who spoke at the BG Tourism - Summer 2025 forum here on Sunday said that Bulgaria is no longer a cheap destination on the global tourism market, and this should be clearly communicated.
Dimitrov stated: "The tourists are changing. French, Italians are coming and working in our hotels. This means that our product has to change too, and we cannot continue to position ourselves as a low-budget option"
The Secretary to the President said that events such as this forum organized by BTA should be strategically integrated into Bulgaria's communication policy, as they allow for a clear formulation of messages before, during and after the tourist season.
Commenting on disinformation, Dimitrov concurred that facts in news articles should be double-checked, since a statement that omits parts of the picture can lead to completely false conclusions.
Dimitrov identified the quality of the tourism product as a key issue for the future of the industry. He added: "The problem is that at the moment we lack the tools to measure quality - not just nationally but locally. Even mayors lack the ability to assess the extent to which services in their municipality meet high standards." He stressed that quality is the sum of many components, such as accessibility, connectivity, infrastructure, vision, medical care, staff training, and they all need to be monitored and assessed in sync.
