A National Sheep Breeders' Gathering opens today for the 13th time near the Petropavlovski Monastery. The event brings together farmers, food producers using Bulgarian raw materials, artisans, performers, and visitors.
This year, the gathering will showcase various animal breeds, though the number of sheep and goats will be limited due to disease prevention measures mandated by the Ministry of Agriculture and the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency, according to Simeon Karakolev, head of the National Sheep and Goat Breeders Association (NOKA), the main organizer.
Only 30–40 sheep and goats of various breeds will be displayed in pens.
The event will begin with traditional performances by kukeri and bagpipe players.
On the first day, popular chef Uti Bachvarov will prepare a traditional lamb stew for the visitors. Over 2,000 portions will be distributed.
This year’s exhibition includes more cows, buffaloes, horses, shepherd dogs, and exotic animals. A ram from the Millennium breed that was recently developed in Bulgaria, will be a key exhibit.
Delegations from 12 countries will attend. The program includes farming competitions, cultural reenactments, exhibitions, and trade shows.
Over 3,000 participants have signed up for the folk contest "The Lamb Has Baaed," said Galina Ivanova. Prizes will be awarded to participants aged 3 to 88 by the European Commission Representation.
More than 25 farmers will present their products, including members of the Bulgarian Agrarian Chamber, which was established two years ago and includes 13 agricultural organizations with over 12,000 members.
The venue has parking space for over 15,000 vehicles, and for the first time, a designated area for campers.
Evening concerts will feature popular pop and folk singers. On the last day, the Rozhen orchestra will perform at noon. The program also includes group dances, a fire-walking show, and cooking.
The event is supported by the Ministry of Agriculture and local municipalities. Media partners include BTA, BNR, and Radio Veselina.
