The payment of the first pensions in euro in Bulgaria begins on January 7 and ends on January 20, the press office of the National Social Security Institute (NSSI) said. This applies to cash payments, which will be made as usual at post offices across the country. Transfers of January pension payments to the accounts of pensioners who receive their money by bank transfer will be carried out within one day on January 7.

Bulgaria officially joined the eurozone on January 1, 2026.

On January 6, the head of the newly established Coordination Centre for the Euro, Vladimir Ivanov, gave assurances that the payment of pensions in euro will proceed smoothly. About 71% of pensioners receive their pensions by bank transfer, while the rest collect them from offices of Bulgarian Posts, he said during a briefing.

The Interior Ministry said police are implementing increased security measures around post offices and banks across the country in connection with the payment of the first pensions in euro.

The date for the payment of unemployment benefits in the first month of the year is January 15.

Information on all types of payments made by the NSSI to insured persons and pensioners is updated monthly and is available on the institution’s website under the Payments Calendar section.
