Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov told International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva on Tuesday that the Bulgarian government is strictly adhering to its commitments in the process of the country’s adoption of the single European currency, to ensure a smooth transition. Zhelyazkov and Georgieva held talks within the framework of a high-level conference taking place at Sofia’s Boyana Residence.

The two agreed that joining the euro area represents a historic step for Bulgaria. The IMF Managing Director congratulated the country on the progress achieved and emphasized that adopting the euro must go hand in hand with the pursuit of sound economic policies.

During their discussion, alongside the process of successfully introducing the euro, Prime Minister Zhelyazkov highlighted the government’s consistent efforts to promote economic growth and maintain fiscal discipline. Enhancing competitiveness is also a key focus of the government’s policies — both at the national level and within the broader European context, the Prime Minister underlined.
