site.btaBulgaria Unveils Its First Monument to Danish Writer Hans Christian Andersen in Sveti Vlas

The first monument in Bulgaria dedicated to Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen was unveiled in the seaside resort of Sveti Vlas on Tuesday. The bas-relief, crafted by sculptor Petko Yordanov, is part of the Alley of Nations at the Marina Dinevi yacht port. Alongside Andersen’s likeness is inscribed the quote: "There are no better tales than those that life creates."
The ceremony was attended by the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Denmark to Bulgaria, Flemming Stender, Sveti Vlas Mayor Ivan Nikolov, the co-chairs of the Bulgarian Memory – Bratya Dinevi Foundation, Dinko and Yordan Dinevi, former ministers, and guests from Bulgaria and Denmark.
Ambassador Stender said he was honoured to attend the ceremony. Around the world, children grow up listening to Andersen’s tales, which teach people important lessons about life, human nature, and morality, he noted. He added that Andersen’s work “is not just stories but bridges between cultures and peoples,” emphasizing that the bas-relief symbolizes not only the genius of the writer but also the friendship between Denmark and Bulgaria. The ambassador recalled that Andersen visited Vidin in 1841 during a journey along the Danube and was enchanted by Bulgarian nature, which he said resembled that of his native Denmark.
The Alley of Nations in Sveti Vlas features bas-reliefs of several historic figures, including Vasil Levski, Hristo Botev, Sandor Petofi, and Giuseppe Garibaldi.
