A commemorative plaque honoring Bulgarian rock icon Kiril Marichkov was unveiled outside his family home in central Sofia, in a ceremony that brought together musicians, officials, and admirers. The plaque pays tribute to Marichkov’s legacy as the lead member of the legendary band Shturcite [The Crickets] and a symbol of artistic integrity and resistance.

Former President Petar Stoyanov, who led Bulgaria from 1997 to 2002, praised Marichkov’s cultural and civic impact. "Kiril Marichkov and boys like him will forever remain in our memory," he said. "He wasn’t just a symbol of Bulgarian rock - he gave us hope during dark times. He stood firm in his views, even when it wasn’t easy." Stoyanov also referenced Marichkov’s outspoken anti-communist stance, notably through songs like "Az ne sym komunist" ("I'm Not a Communist").

The plaque was initiated by Sofia Municipality and its deputy chair Dr. Vanya Tagareva. Marichkov’s family, including his sister Lyuba, wife Veselina, and son Kiril Marichkov Jr., also spoke at the ceremony.

"This plaque is a tribute to our brother, husband, son, and friend," said Lyuba. "The house was built by our grandfather, who lived here for nearly 80 years. The memory of Kiril will stay with us forever."

"I hope this plaque represents the love for what my father left behind," added his son. "He believed what matters most is what you leave for others - and he left a lot."

Among the attendees were also Sofia Mayor Vasil Terziev, Tourism Minister Miroslav Borshosh. Dr. Vanya Tagareva, Blagorodna Zdravkova – Sofia Deputy Mayor for Culture, Education, Youth & Sports, and architect Stanislav Konstantinov – Designer of the memorial plaque.
