The Thracian Warrior exhibition opens in the temporary gallery of Varna Archaeological Museum, organizers said here on Monday.
It brings together artefacts from the National Archaeological Institute with Museum at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and the regional history museums of Plovdiv, Ruse, Shumen and Varna. Visitors can examine finely crafted weapons and protective gear that demonstrate Thracian technological skill, along with explanatory panels on each item’s history and purpose.
Residents and visitors of Varna will have a rare chance to view Thracian arms not displayed in the museum for three decades, Regional History Museum Director Igor Lazarenko told BTA. He added that most pieces normally remain in storage so as not to disrupt the lenders’ permanent exhibitions.
Among the ceremonial weapons, the most striking are suits of armour in precious metal, lavishly embellished with floral and animal motifs or narrative scenes. For the Thracians these objects signified power and high rank.
The exhibition runs until the end of 2025.
