On Wednesday, National Assembly Chair Nataliya Kiselova and Nikolay Denkov will open a photo-documentary exhibition at the National Assembly, titled "The Worldwide Echo of the April Uprising". The event, will be attended by the great-grandson of William Gladstone - Francis Gladstone, at the invitation of Denkov, said the Continue the Change part press centre  on Tuesday.

The April Uprising of 1876 was suppressed in a particularly cruel manner by the Ottoman authorities with the participation of the regular army and irregular formations (bashibozuks). The atrocities committed against the civilian population caused a strong international response. It was this public resonance that created the necessary political conditions for the future military intervention of the Russian Empire in the Balkan Peninsula. After significant diplomatic, military and logistical preparations, including the participation of the Bulgarian militia, Russia declared war on the Ottoman Empire in 1877, an event that would lead to the Liberation of Bulgaria.

The exhibition briefly presents the contribution of several key figures who played a decisive role in the formation of public opinion in countries such as Britain, the USA and Russia. Among them were British Prime Minister William Gladstone, journalists Januarius Aloysius McGahan and James David Boucher, as well as noblewoman Lady Emily Anne Smythe - Viscountess Strangford.
