Deputy Minister of Sport Petar Georgiev opened the Republican Snooker Championship, just four days before the official holiday of the Bulgarian sport - May 17. He honoured the invitation of the President of the Bulgarian Snooker Federation, Oleg Velinov, by launching the last ranking tournament of the season in the newly opened National Snooker Academy.

Georgiev was also in attendance live on November 26 last year when he and legends Ronnie O'Sullivan and Jimmy White officially opened the academy at Vasil Levski Stadium.

"About five months ago, we opened the National Snooker Academy, where we can do a lot of ranking tournaments from the federation's calendar, as well as a lot of open tournaments to popularise snooker. I would like to thank Deputy Minister Petar Georgiev for honouring our invitation to open the Republican Championship, which closes the ranking season. From September we hope to start the new campaign and improve many things we have started in Bulgarian snooker - not only in terms of promotion but also in terms of the quality of the game," said Oleg Velinov.

"I would like to assure you that the Ministry of Youth and Sports is making a huge effort in the financial support of the federations and I wish the Bulgarian Snooker Federation – with the help of other sponsors and patrons – to continue to develop the sport," the deputy minister said.
