The Municipality of Sliven supported the Music Instead of the Street project with a BGN 30,000 donation. The donation contract was concluded on Monday between the mayor Stefan Radev and maestro Georgi Kalaidjiev, head of the project, the press centre of the local government said.

"Music Instead of the Street is the most successful integration project. The Municipality of Sliven will continue to support it, because this gives children from families in need a chance to show their talent in the field of classical music and realize themselves in life," said Mayor Radev.

For 14 years, the world-famous violinist Georgi Kalaidjiev has been helping disadvantaged children with his project Music Instead of the Street. He himself was born in the Roma ghetto Nadezhda in Sliven. Thanks to his music and his own efforts he has been an established musician on the international music scene for years.

Eleven specialists work with the children, along with the coordinator, music educator Radka Kuseva. The school has given music training in violin, viola, cello, double bass, piano and guitar to over 300 children.

Maestro Kalaidjiev said that on September 13, a new children's cultural centre will open. "Since the establishment of the school, we have worked with aid provided by Germany, and now that the Municipality of Sliven has given us a vote of confidence, I am very happy and content because this is all about our [Sliven's] children," he said.
