The Plovdiv Regional Archaeological Museum presented the results of their project on the renewal of their permanent exhibition and the introduction of a modern audio guide.
"On the one hand, we have renewed the permanent exhibition, because since its creation 15 years ago, colleagues have made a number of studies and discoveries that can now be presented to the public. On the other hand, we are introducing new technologies for working with audiences," Dr. Aksiniya Buteva, chief curator at the museum and project manager, told BTA. In one of the renovated exhibition halls, visitors can see five completely rearranged showcases that present some of the most valuable archaeological treasures from the region.
The project, worth BGN 150,000, was implemented with the financial support of the Culture Ministry. Buteva emphasized that the museum's visitors were a very important partner as well, as the museum is oriented towards different age groups. An an example she pointed to the new audio guide of the museum, which can be listened to by scanning a QR code on a card every visitor gets with the entrance ticket. "They are free of charge and after people leave the museum, they will be able to watch and listen to the stories they like again,” she explained, adding that the text has also been translated into English, and there is also sign language translation for the hearing-impaired.
She pointed out that magnifying glasses for visitors with impaired vision and mobile chairs have also been purchased, which can be used while walking through the exhibition. The structure for access to the early Christian tomb has been strengthened to make it easier to view and a special place is also given to the showcase presenting a collection of horse ammunition, where visitors can see a set of silver applications for a horse halter from a burial mound near the village of Chernozemen, which is an exceptional example of Thracian art. “We believe that we have created an extremely interesting and comfortable environment for our visitors and we will be pleased to welcome them,” Buteva said.
“The permanent exhibition has been supplemented and updated with another 150 exhibits. I believe that what has emerged as the final product is interesting and will provide even greater clarity, vision and information about the past of Philippopolis and its region in antiquity,” Museum Director Kostadin Kisyov said.
“I think that we should all be proud that in our city, perhaps the only one in Bulgaria, several brand new exhibitions are opening within one week,” said Plovdiv Deputy Mayor Plamen Panov. "The truth is that if this drive were not happening, if there were no such unanimity between the Municipality and the Plovdiv museums, the intensity of tourist visits to Plovdiv would probably have stopped long ago," he stressed, adding that Plovdiv has achieved an 8% growth in overnight stays during the first nine months of 2025.
