Paisii Hilendarski University of Plovdiv is starting the new academic year with more than 4,000 first-year students, the university's rector, Prof. Rumen Mladenov, said in his welcoming speech on Wednesday. The university has over 17,000 students enrolled in 120 bachelor's, 140 master's, and 94 doctoral programmes in 27 fields of study.
The university works on key national and international projects and scientific programmes. These range from Erasmus mobility programmes, which enable students to spend a semester at a foreign university of their choice or to undertake an internship in a foreign company, to educational projects in which new educational technologies are developed and applied in the real learning process. There are nearly 240 agreements for training and internships for University of Plovdiv students under the Erasmus+ programme, and over 50 inter-institutional agreements outside the programme.
Deputy Education and Science Minister Nikolay Vitanov praised the university for having built excellent reputation both in Bulgaria and on the global scene over the past decades.
Plovdiv Regional Governor Hristina Yancheva said that the University of Plovdiv is a pillar of science and education in Bulgaria. She praised the faculty for turning their students into high-quality specialists highly sought by the labour market.
True to tradition, the first-year students were presented with the university insignia—the symbolic key to academic knowledge, the institution’s flag, and a copy of A Slavonic-Bulgarian History written in 1762 by the historian after whom the university is named.
