site.btaAlleged Attackers of Police Chief May Face Up to 15-Year Prison Sentences


The people who allegedly assaulted Senior Commissioner Nikolay Kozhuharov, chief of the Ruse Regional Police Directorate, and a 36-year-old neighbour of his on Thursday, may face up to 5 and up to 15 years in prison, Ruse deputy District Prosecutor, Miroslav Marinov, and Deputy Director of the Ruse Regional Police Directorate, Aleksandar Kovachev, reported during a joint press conference here on Friday.
Four people aged 15, 18, 18, and 19 were detained on Thursday. Two of them have been charged with hooliganism, and two have been charged with causing grievous bodily injury to a public official. On Saturday, the Ruse District Prosecutor's Office will file a request with the District Court for a permanent measure of restraint, detention in custody, for all four.
The alleged perpetrators were arrested on Thursday when the attack on Kozhuharov transpired. Kanev University Hospital, where Kozhuharov is being treated, told BTA that there has been no change in his condition. He remains in the hospital's intensive care unit, where he is undergoing pulmonary and hemodynamic stabilization.
