Democratic Bulgaria have prepared a bill that reorganizes the Commissoin for Countering Corruption (Counter-Corruption Commission) in such a way that it will not be a weapon in the hands of the ruling majority, said Nadezhda Yordanova MP of Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria (CC-DB) here on Wednesday. She told journalists in Parliament's lobby that the Commission will be closed in its current form.
According to her, the functions of establishing conflicts of interest and verifying the compliance of public figures' assets will be secured by another commission.
Bozhidar Bozhanov MP of CC-DB commented: "Just as we previously divided the Counter-Corruption and Unlawfully Acquired Assets Forfeiture Commission into two commissions, we will now close down the bludgeon and should create a much lighter structure to deal with conflicts of interest, corruption prevention, and other issues. However, the bludgeon-like powers will be removed."
Earlier on Wednesday, MRF - New Beginning Floor Leader Delyan Peevski tabled in Parliament a proposal to close the Commission for Counteracting Corruption.
A political standoff has emerged in Bulgaria over the future of the Counter-Corruption Commission, as top leaders clash over whether to reform or abolish the body - an institution central to Bulgaria’s commitments to the EU under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan.
