A total of 67 municipalities in Bulgaria have yet to submit requests for training on the BG-Alert early warning system, Interior Minister Daniel Mitov said at a news briefing at the Council of Ministers on Wednesday. He urged local authorities to expedite the process.

“The Council of Ministers has approved the plan for completing the implementation of the BG-Alert system,” Mitov confirmed. “The system is operational and deadlines have been shortened.”

According to him, regional administrations have already undergone training, along with personnel from the Ministry of Environment and Water and the National Institute of Hydrology and Meteorology. During recent wildfire incidents, the system was activated several times in Burgas, Plovdiv, Pazardzhik, and Veliko Tarnovo, primarily by regional governors.

Mitov emphasized that the rollout of the system will continue until all municipalities are fully trained.

Regarding the wildfire situation, the Interior Minister warned citizens against lighting fires in their yards or in open areas. “The wildfire in the Burgas region was caused by such behaviour. In the current hot weather, winds can rapidly fuel and spread flames. Human negligence is often the cause of serious damage and even harm to people,” he underscored.
