Commenting on the European Parliament's decision to adopt a report confirming that Bulgaria fulfils the criteria for adopting the euro on January 1, 2026, MECh Floor Leader Kiril Veselinski told reporters here on Tuesday that this was an expected act, while July 8 was a historic day for Bulgaria, since the social contract between the government and the public had been "torn to pieces".
Veselinski expressed his confidence that the majority of Bulgarians were unwilling to see their country adopt the euro in 2026. He listed some reasons for this that included inflation, price spikes, lapses in government, regulatory and institutional oversight.
The MECh MP said that the Rosen Zhelyazkov cabinet will likely crumble under the "social riots that eurozone membership and the hard winter will cause". He suggested that from now on, a voice of the majority of Bulgarian citizens will emerge and it will be against the current political class, which does not respect their opinion on Bulgaria's eurozone membership. Veselinski insisted on new elections.
