In just one month, more than six million electronic prescriptions have been verified for validity through the real-time control system for prescribing and dispensing medications covered by the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF), Information Services AD said on Tuesday. Since the beginning of June 2025, when the new process was launched, over nine million validation requests have been registered by doctors and pharmacists to check the correctness of prescriptions. The average processing time per request is under one second, with no impact on prescription fulfillment time. The system is fully integrated and synchronized with the National Health Information System (NHIS).

The data show that in just one month, the new system flagged nearly 73,000 incorrect prescriptions during the preliminary check and over 33,000 errors during the final validation. This has significantly benefited more than 28,000 patients, who were spared from returning to the doctor and then back to the pharmacy due to incorrect prescriptions. Common mistakes by physicians include duplicate prescriptions, prescribing drugs not listed in the patient's medication record, or tied to inactive diagnoses. The most frequent pharmacy-related errors involve duplicate combinations of serial numbers/product codes in the NHIS.

The new process greatly assists doctors by providing real-time feedback—either confirming the prescription is correctly issued or returning a list of errors to correct. This validation is seamlessly embedded in the physicians’ standard medical software workflows and does not extend prescription processing time. Real-time validation is also highly beneficial for pharmacists, who no longer need to wait until the end of the reporting period to know whether the NHIF will reimburse them for dispensed medications. Now, payment validation occurs instantly.

The real-time prescription and dispensing process ensures maximum protection of patients’ rights under the health insurance system and enhances control over public healthcare expenditures, Information Services AD added.

At the end of May, the NHIF announced that the new control process stems from amendments to the Health Insurance Act, which came into force on October 8, 2024. Under these amendments, the creation of electronic documents in the NHIS, used to verify services funded by the NHIF, must undergo automated preliminary checks.
