site.btaPM Zhelyazkov On Continue the Change Co-Chair Petkov’s Resignation: Equality Before the Law Must Be Guaranteed
Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov said that going forward, it is essential to guarantee equality before the law, as he commented in response to a BTA inquiry about Kiril Petkov’s resignation as both MP and Chair of Continue the Change.
“I became aware of this conduct after the NATO summit ended. Any political organization that identifies with anti-corruption must uphold the corresponding responsibilities. I believe Mr. Petkov’s actions reflect an effort to accept accountability for the disclosed information. Moving forward, it is essential to ensure equality before the law, as the rule of law requires that legal standards apply equally to everyone,” Zhelyazkov added.
At a BTA press conference earlier on Wednesday, Kiril Petkov resigned as MP and co-leader of Continue the Change, saying the party’s mission outweighs any individual. Accepting blame for missteps in selecting Sofia candidates and denying personal wrongdoing, he cited possible corruption among district mayors, voiced full confidence in Assen Vassilev and the party leadership, and questioned the authenticity of a leaked recording alleging municipal collusion.
